From the Musical Sketchbook

Last summer was the beginning of getting reacquainted with charcoal. This is a medium you get to know well or leave it alone. Well, I’m no quitter.

Last summer, I kept a sketchbook and began with a series of musicians from the 70s. While I’m yet to complete the book, I’ve made ample progress and continue to experiment in a number of ways. The sketchbook became such a consuming task that I didn’t get much done outside of it. It was a bit of an obsession.

I’m further along than the video here, but to give an idea of what I’m talking about…

      • Yes, it definitely has those attributes. Crazy how I stopped using pastel because of the messiness. I love charcoal now that I understand it better.

      • It’s funny because I’m quite a perfectionist and like tidiness in other areas of my life. But when I took my first art class (in early 2020), I loved charcoal almost immediately–I think because it went against those perfectionist tendencies and made me feel a bit wild and free, like a child, again.
