The Sound of Silence and Anger

The first time I heard The Sound of Silence, it was planted in my brain. It was, and still is, a powerful song.  If I were a musician not wanting to go solo, I’d definitely become part of a duo.

Yeah, you have to work with some kind of band or whoever but you’re only on the stage with your partner. There’d be no one fighting for a spotlight, really.

Think about it. You’re writing together, sitting at the sidewalk café dining together and running in the field with your face to the sun, picking dandelions in sync. What could possibly be better than that, other than the millions of dollars chi-chinging in your bank account while doing something you love?

Well, it just so happens that these two guys hate each other. Simon and Garfunkel, if you’re not familiar. Ironically enough, they’ve been all but silent about it. Age has no maturation when it comes to a good fight. Now, I don’t mean to say I’ve got my pompoms out and cheering them on, I simply find it intriguing it could all boil down to Simon saying he hates the sound of Garfunkel’s voice after recording such a beautiful song together. What exactly brought this on?

It’s really simple. Garfunkel wanted to exercise his chops as an actor. Now! I’m not saying singers don’t make good actors but if they insist, Tubi is a nice little platform to practice on nowadays. Tubi gives everybody a chance. I’m thinking about writing a script of me walking around the house next weekend, okay?

Anyhow, Garfunkel became ambitious in that way and Simon wasn’t feeling it. He already knew Garfunkel didn’t have what it took ’cause look where he is now. I’ve never seen him acting in anything, you?

I do understand that spats happen, however. I’ve had one very recently myself but I didn’t write songs or sing with them for years. Plus, we’re women. You can expect that from us. I know some women folk will beg the differ but I will beg for it back. Men are held to a higher standard because emotion is a female thing. Men feel less, at least they used to. I allude to nothing, I’m just trying to comprehend the split. And honestly, I’m led to now believe, which would make perfect sense, maybe they’re, I don’t know…feminists with underarm hair?

  1. Hmm. I have five brothers, a ton of male cousins, and four close male friends, and I’m here to tell you men aren’t emotionless, if anything, they’re more prone to fighting and arguing with their homeboys because of jealousy, ego, and um . . . women. And trust me, they will damage each other blow by blow as if the person never even mattered to them.. It’s really quite heartbreaking to watch.

But as for the song, I have always loved it. It has always been rather creepy yet inviting to me.

I wonder if they’ll ever forgive one another or if they’re just going to take this animosity to the grave. Hmm.

  2. I’m being facetious to a degree. Though that doesn’t take away that those guys should be ashamed of themselves. Just walk away with grace. And these women they’re fighting over? I hope they’re worth every blow, and not to be judgemental, but I sorta doubt it. I mean, it’s plausible the guy who initiates the fight will lose and I’d certainly hate that man to be mine.

Yeah, that song is a bit haunting; coming in softly but with such depth. Those folk singers are good for that, visual arts included. Always a message symbolic of a deep truth.

I may be missing something in this friction between the two but that was a big part of it.
