I haven’t quite turned the corner on my basketball series, but I’ll get there, to include NBA players also. Ladies first, okay?

This one was masked off, so it’s a little under 18×24. Since starting my portrait series in the sketchbook last year, I fell in love with the black and white. I wish I’d gone with a textured watercolor background, since it’s cheaper but nooooo, I like to buy art supplies. 

I like going in the Home Depot too. They’re a busy crew but typically, when you locate help, they’re right friendly and know how to make you feel good about being there. Not so today.

Ever come across the help that avoids being of help at all? I got so tired of how she was translating that she didn’t want to help that I left her and the cart at the checkout. I wasn’t upset or anything. Just got tired of hearing excuses and what I needed to do, versus her, who works there. How do you get through a workday shuckin’ and jivin’? And why would you want to?

A little background on A’ja Wilson is that she wasn’t considering basketball in the least. She’s a girly girl and if you’ve seen her dolled up, you can visualize a nice sized walk-in closet. It was her dad, who also played, that said It’s in your blood. You’re gonna get out there and play some ball. And I’m glad he got onto her about it. She’s 6’5″, twice MVP and in the running for a third. I think she’s the coolest. And if I have to say so myself, cool recognizes cool.

Once I get the first 6 portraits done, I’ll report from the locker room to introduce all the players to you.

I still have some work to do on this one. Because I’m using gouache in the background, I may have to scale down. Gouache comes in very small tubes in the shape of toothpaste. Sighhhhh…
