Around July of last year, I started drawing portraits of musicians from the 70s as a tribute to the artists and old school music. I may have said this already but in case you missed it, it’s called From the Musical Sketchbook. I have less than 20 more portraits to compose before the book is complete and today honors Phoebe Snow.
Phoebe Snow embodied a sound so pure. Her voice is poetry in itself, with a folksy sound that draws the listener in like a sweet whisper. To this day, whenever I hear Poetry Man, I stop what I’m doing to take in the beauty of her lyrics.
Snow sang quite a few jingles too. As a matter of fact, this was bread and butter and she put recording aside for commercials. Pivoting in this direction helped her become a more involved mother and we can’t be mad about that, right? It was a beautiful arrangement, as she needed to care for her daughter, who was born with brain damage.
Such opportunities parlayed into other areas and she sang A Different World’s theme song its first season. In addition, Snow had other hits, her sophomore album, Second Childhood, went certified gold.
We are forever honored you graced us with your gift, Ms. Phoebe Snow.
Rest in love.
I’m so glad you gave us a glimpse of your musical sketchbook (what a great idea) and your description of Phoebe Snow’s voice is perfect!

I’m glad you enjoyed it. I started this for several reasons. For one, I love old school music and have a stronger appreciation for it compared to contemporary music. Secondly, I’d never been consistent in keeping a sketchbook. I wasted them more than anything and it allows me to experiment. So, it’s become an essential part of my art practice. Plus, I journal on the back pages.
Yes, her voice is magical. Thank you for commenting.

I feel like she did The Folgers coffee jingle at one point. “The best part of waking up is Folgers in your cuuuuppppp.”
Or maybe I just hear her voice when I hear the jingle from the early to late 80s.
I’d never even heard this song before, but I am a fan of it now!

Welcome to the fan club. I won’t charge you anything for coming aboard 😀.
I’ll have to research Folgers to see if that’s her voice. I recall being confused as to why in the second season A Different World changed gears with the theme song. I didn’t like it but nobody asked me, so…

Wasn’t it Aretha who did the second season’s version? I think so. You already know what’s up with that. Aretha was big-time around that time and the show was beginning to take off heavily, too.
$$$, it’s always about the money. 🥺

Yes, it was Aretha. She was doing too much with that song. But yeah, you’re right. It’s always some political move. Retha probably thought she sounded better but I beg the differ.
