We All Got A Space to Fill

You can’t get over, if you say you just don’t care (don’t care)
Show me a boy who stays in school
And I’ll show you a boy aware
Dig it

I remember going to my first Prince concert. I sat in the yonders and screamed like a wildchild on steroids. I had the Purple Rain album and like many songs, I knew the words. Vanity, The Time and Sheila E were there and I tell you, when the lights were turned off on the stage and all you saw were Sheila E’s drumsticks lit up and moving like fire, I was in total awe. I’d never seen a woman do that!

However, before Purple Rain, Prince made a first appearance on American Bandstand in the late 70s, hosted by Dick Clark. He sang Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad. He was so shy and awkward during the interview but when the music played for him to perform, he was in his comfort zone. I loved his music from the start and was heartbroken at his passing. Though, what a musician of so many talents and he seemed to use them all.

Imagine being a high school kid and hanging out with your buddies. All of you have big dreams for your music and when one of them make it, you reach back and pull your friend into the folds to make music too. That’s what Prince Rogers Nelson did for Morris Day, to form the group, The Time. It’s beautiful.

I can’t even run down all of what Prince accomplished. I just love hearing the stories others have told about him. He espoused an energy artists wanted to connect with.  He launched so many careers and produced a lot of music, yet he had to be one of the most humble guys in the industry. Always composed and thoughtful.

It’s difficult to put one thing above the other when it comes to his life and music. He was packed with pure genius married with passion and is among the truth tellers through song. And I have to say he is because his music lives on. Years from now, we’ll look back and say Prince was sending us a message in this or that song. If you’ve studied his music at all, you can surely say that now.

Prince, you are sorely missed. As you Rest in Love, you remain in the hearts of so many.

  1. I’ve been a fan since seeing the film purple rain with my brother in 1984. Back then they were too stringent on who a guardian was and because he was 19 and I was 14 it was all good. Of course this was freshman year of high school and that album was huge, it was my first Prince Record. After that i bought his back catalogue in record/tape/cd and stream. Even went so far back in the day to buy the black album at a record con and regret not holding on to that.

Saw Prince in Philly in 2004 and he was wearing those yellow assless chaps pants πŸ™„ Still a great time though

    • Yep, the movie was a hit back then. The marketing was tight for everything Purple Rain. I remember playing one of the songs on the album backwards, as the rumor was to do it, and he was saying ‘I know the Lord is coming soon.’ I don’t recall which track it was. Man, that’s back when I had my little album collection and my dad bought me a stereo. I thought I had it going on. Some kinda way, I had money…okay, my dad was giving me money and the first thing I’d buy were records and pants. An odd mix πŸ€”.

    • You’re 1000% correct on that. I saw a couple of people call him a magician. They said one minute he was talking to them and then looked away for a split second and back again and he was gone. Beyond amazing.
